Rack railway: museum, information and opening times |
The historic Sassi - Superga rack railway is the only one of its kind
in Italy. It is the continuation of a tradition that started on the
26th April 1884 with the funicular’s first trip. The line was
transformed into a rack railway in 1934 and today, completely restored,
offers visitors a trip back in time in the original carriages from
which you can enjoy an unforgettable view
The
line runs for 3.1km between the station at Sassi and the station at
Superga, climbing for 425m with an average gradient of 13.5%, reaching
a maximum of 21% in the last stretch between Pian Gambino and Superga
Station.
The ticket office is inside the station at Sassi where you
can also visit the railway museum. Inside the station at Superga, on
the other hand, is the Visitor Centre of the Parchi della Collina di
Superga. The Centre organises a series of events and activities aimed
at promoting students’ and adults’ knowledge of the area. There is a
bar-pizzeria-restaurant at the station in Sassi.
The train
consists of an engine and a maximum of 2 carriages, which can hold a
total of 210 passengers. In the afternoons of holidays (though not in
winter), two trains run at the same time. The service is also
accessible to those with disabilities on Wednesday and Saturday
afternoons, with assistance available to those who book at GTT tourist
offices.
