The idea of enhancing public appreciation of the Turin hills and
linking them together through a network of paths and planned walks,
with urban and river parks, dates back to the 1970s. Today this huge
project has become a pleasant reality: a single route that unwinds
through existing parks, planned parks, and areas of natural, historical
and environmental importance. Turin, as well as being crossed by four
rivers, also has the good fortune of being “protected” by hills that
run north-east to south-west, hills that, in the Turin stretch, reach
as high as 720m at Col della Maddalena. Turin Council, which for years
has been interested in making improvements to the area, together with
the Environmental Sector and the Pro Natura Association of Turin, has
created the Green Ring path for walkers. This project, along with Turin
City of Water, joins hill and river in a continuous and homogenous
path, with varying characteristics according to the natural features
along the way. The path may be used freely by everyone. It runs through
existing public property, improving the facilities available to its
users. It also runs through panoramic viewing points that have been
acquired in areas of outstanding beauty, to allow walkers to make the
most of the hills.
The
project focuses primarily on the rediscovery of existing paths
(recovered thanks to the “Sentieri della Collina Torinese”
Organisation). Secondly, an aim was to create a continuous path
starting at the banks of the River Po (Valentino – Ponte Isabella
area), to reach the Maddalena Park (through the Leopardi and San Vito
parks). The paths meet at Superga (going through Regalie, Mongreno, the
Ottolenghi Institute, Beria Grande), before going back down to the Po
(Meisino area), through Pian Gambino and Millerose park. The path runs
inside the Turin council boundaries and includes the well-known path
that runs along the crest of the hills, known as the Grande Traversata
della Collina.
