Trail “Pian Gambino”
Starting point: Basilica of Superga
Time: 1 ora
Distance: about 2.5 Km
Height gain: 165 m
Trail theme: chestnut copse with sessile oak, hornbeam and maple
Signposts: blue footprint on white background
From
the square in which the Basilica stands take the steep ridge path that
descends parallel to Strada Montanino down to a crossroad. Turn left
along a long, seemingly level stretch through the oaks of the Bosco
della Comunità di San Mauro T.se. Then go down to the right along the
ridge before taking an easy path to the left. This descends gently to
Pian Gambino, where you can take the rack railway from this midway stop
either to go back up to the Basilica or down towards Turin.
At Pian
Gambino all the main tree formations of the woods are present in a
small area: chestnut copses in which several trunks, known as tillers,
grow out from one base, sessile oak copses, and the locust trees that
have taken over the area just below the Strada Comunale di Superga.
Sentiero "Serralunga"
Starting point: Monte Aman
Road access: Strada Panoramica dei Colli
Time: 3 hours
Height gain: 250 m
Trail theme: panoramic view and interesting vegetation
Signposts: green footprint on white background
Recommended period: spring and autumn
This
rather long but easy trail offers a good view of the hills and the
Basilica of Superga, and is the richest route in terms of flora and
fauna. In addition it crosses the biggest stream in the park, rio
Serralunga, and the main hamlets of Superga that are still inhabited.
You can get there from the noticeboard of Monte Aman on the Strada
Panoramica, or via the midway rack railway stop at Pian Gambino. The
trail runs through oak woods along the crest of Monte Aman (Costa
Serralunga). To the sides of the easy dirt road there are many Turkey
oaks, now rare in the Turin hills, recognisable by their acorn cups
with their long, soft, “untidy” scales. About 600m on from the
noticeboard at Monte Aman the track forks: if you keep to the right you
carry on along the ridge for a bit and you can walk a ring that takes
you back to the main route. Continuing to the left, on the other hand,
as you go down towards the stream, the oaks of Costa Serralunga give
way to locust tree woods, damaged by fires, and the mixed woods on the
cooler side of the hill where some large beech trees can also be seen.
After having walked down a stretch between two slopes, the path bends
to the right and forks. If you go the left you reach the Sentiero degli
Alberi (Tree Trail), or you can go down to Villa Cartman. If you stay
on the marked trail, however, the path gets steeper and after a few
bends take you to rio Serralunga. By the water you can find vegetation
that is typical of the fresh, fertile soil of the woods, such as the
anemone nemorosa, hepatica nobilis, wild garlic, caucasica, Solomon’s
Seal and Jupiter’s distaff. These little vales, though near the city,
are home to buzzards, kites and different species of sparrow. After the
stream a section of tarmacked road winds through meadows, vineyards and
orchards up to the Beria Grande farmhouse. A good road, once paved,
goes between two rows of cherry trees up to Tetti Canera. From here you
reach the Superga road. Go up the tarmacked stretch for a few tens of
metres then turn right towards the almost completely renovated hamlet
of Tetti Rocco. After the group of houses, a pleasant path takes you up
a gentle rise to the sunny side of the hill where it joins the Strada
Panoramica. Turn right to complete the ring, going back to Monte Aman.
Sentiero “Tetti Ronchi”
Starting point: Strada Baldissero - Superga
Time: about 2 hours
Distance: about 4.5 Km
Height gain: 230 m.
Trail theme: clearing with rosemary
Signposts: pink footprint on white background
From
Strada Baldissero heading towards Superga where the road forks with
Strada Palucco take a path on the right. This descends gently to
Cascina Fenoglio, a long uninhabited farmhouse that is still beautiful.
From the hamlet of Tetti Ronchi the path climbs again towards Strada
Baldissero, passing through a large area of shrubland that was once
farmed. Continuing you come across woods of locust trees and, higher
up, some beech trees. Once on Strada Baldissero you immediately leave
the tarmac to take a path on the right that leads to the Strada
Panoramica where there is a parking area with a pump. The descent down
the same side of the hill completes the route.
Sentiero degli Alberi (Tree Trail)
Starting point: Strada Panoramica, Monte Aman
Time: 1 hour
Distance: 3.5 Km
Height gain: 85m.
Trail theme: varieties of trees and shrubs of the hills
Signposts: yellow footprint on white background
From
the carpark of Monte Aman (Strada Panoramica), follow the crest of the
hill from where you can see the Basilica of Superga. Go into the woods
on the sunny, south-facing side of the hill on which the sessile oak
and downy oak predominate. The trail goes down and forks where the path
levels out. At first go right to sign number 4, “il salicone”, before
going back again and taking the path to the left. Here the damper
climate and the fresh earth favour trees such as the white poplar, goat
willow and the legendary oak, sacred tree for the ancient Celts. At the
end of the path you can see beech trees, with their silver bark, as
well as conifers in the meadow just before the Strada Panoramica.
